Student's Research

Erica graduated from the University of Michigan in 2022. While an undergraduate student, she worked with Dr. Erica Jansen in the Nutritional Sciences department to investigate the influence of maternal diet on child metabolic health. She then spent one year at the National Institute on Aging where she explored the impacts of physical activity and greenspace on epigenetic aging. After her year at the NIA, she moved to Iowa to start medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine through the Medical Scientist Training Program. While in medical school, she has continued to work on various research projects including looking at the relationship between lead exposure and microbiome, and several clinical projects in neonatology and neurology. Her interest in maternal and child health was strengthened through her clinical rotations in OBGYN and Pediatrics where she was able to see firsthand how research can impact patient care. 

As a NIH OxCam scholar, Erica will continue her research career by investigating the relationship between maternal ambient temperature and phthalate exposure with fetal growth and development. Ultimately, Erica hopes to combine her research and clinical passions to become a physician scientist.

Student Outside the Lab

In her free time, Erica enjoys reading fantasy books, baking vegan treats, and working out. She loves walking/running outside and exploring new places. Her favorite book is The Lord of the Rings.
