The key components to the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program are:
I. The Student
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
 - Receives tuition and stipend support, based on NIH policy, for the duration of the program (approximately 4 yrs.)
 - May partner the OxCam Program with other scholarship programs, such as Rhodes, Gates-Cambridge, or Marshall
 
II. The Doctoral Research
- May be in any area of biomedical research
 - Is derived and driven by the program scholar
 - Conducted in both the NIH and U.K. laboratories (time split evenly between both)
 - Formal coursework is not required
 - Scientific courses are available, if desired
 
III. Two Research Mentors
- Form a dual collaborative mentorship
 - One mentor at a National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural campuses, such as Bethesda, MD; Durham, NC; Phoenix, AZ; or Hamilton, MT
 - One mentor at either the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom
 
IV. One Degree
- Scholars earn a D.Phil. from Oxford or Ph.D. from Cambridge
 - Average time to completion is just over 4 years (approximately 2 years in the US and 2 years in the UK)
 - Faster than the average PhD program in the U.S.
